Terms of service
These Terms are a binding agreement between you and the operator of Satsuma. Please read them. In short: use Satsuma for your own finances, keep your login safe, and check anything important against your original records.
Effective September 28, 2026
Draft for legal review
This document hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer yet and isn't in effect. Highlighted [brackets] are details still to be filled in, and dashed review notes flag decisions for the reviewer. Both disappear once the operator details are configured.
1. Acceptance of these Terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Satsuma website, web application and related services (together, the "Service"), provided by [Company legal name] ("Satsuma", "we", "us" or "our").
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of legal majority where you live if that is higher, to use the Service. By using it, you confirm that you meet this requirement and can form a binding contract.
You may use the Service only for your own personal, non-commercial financial management, and only with accounts, email and financial information that belong to you or that you are authorized to use.
3. Your account
- You must give accurate information when you register and keep it up to date, including a working email address.
- You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for all activity under your account. Use a strong password that you don't use elsewhere.
- Tell us promptly at the contact details below if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.
- Accounts are personal. Don't share your login or let others use your account.
4. The Service
Satsuma helps you organize personal financial information. Depending on how you set it up, the Service can:
- import transactions from files you upload, such as CSV exports from your bank;
- create transactions from purchase alerts you forward to it;
- read receipts from connected email accounts, forwarded emails, PDFs and photos you upload, and extract details such as the merchant, date, items, totals and tax;
- suggest matches between transactions and receipts, and suggest categories;
- track budgets, rollover amounts and savings goals.
The Service does not connect to your bank, move money, make payments or hold funds. It never asks for your online banking credentials.
5. No financial, tax or legal advice
The Service is an organizational tool. It does not provide financial, investment, tax, accounting or legal advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation to take or avoid any financial action. We are not your financial adviser, fiduciary or tax preparer.
Receipt extraction, matching, categorization, projections and other automated outputs are generated by software and may be incomplete or wrong. You are responsible for reviewing them and for checking anything you rely on, including for tax filings, expense claims, reimbursements, budgeting decisions or disputes, against your original statements and receipts. Consult a qualified professional for advice about your situation.
6. Connected accounts and third-party services
You may choose to connect third-party accounts, such as Google (Gmail), Microsoft (Outlook) or another email provider via IMAP. By connecting an account, you:
- authorize us to access that account on your behalf, with read-only permission, to find and process receipts and purchase alerts as described in the Privacy Policy;
- confirm you are entitled to grant that access; and
- acknowledge that the third party's own terms and privacy policy continue to govern your relationship with them.
You can disconnect an account at any time in your settings, and you can also revoke access from the third party's account settings. We are not responsible for third-party services, including their availability, changes to their access rules, or the accuracy of information they provide. If a provider limits or ends our access, related features may stop working.
Emails you forward to Satsuma pass through an email relay service before reaching us, and are accepted only from addresses you have verified.
7. Your content
You keep all rights in the information you upload, import, forward or connect, including transactions, receipts, notes and categories ("Your Content").
You grant us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, process and display Your Content only as needed to provide, secure and support the Service for you, and as described in the Privacy Policy. This license ends when Your Content is deleted from the Service, except for copies we must keep to comply with law, or that remain for a limited time in backups.
We do not sell Your Content, and we do not use it for advertising.
You are responsible for Your Content and confirm you have the right to provide it. Keep your own copies of anything important, such as original receipts needed for tax purposes. The Service is not a records-retention or archiving service.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service for any unlawful, fraudulent or deceptive purpose, including money laundering or hiding the proceeds of crime;
- connect email accounts, or upload or forward information, that you are not authorized to access or share;
- access or attempt to access another user's account or data;
- probe, scan or test the Service for vulnerabilities, or breach its security or authentication measures, except under a responsible disclosure arrangement we have agreed to in writing;
- interfere with or overload the Service, or introduce malware;
- scrape, copy or harvest the Service or its content by automated means, except through features we provide;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Service, except where the law expressly allows it; or
- resell, sublicense or offer the Service to others, or use it to build a competing product.
9. Our intellectual property
The Service, including its software, design, text, graphics and the Satsuma name and logo, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property laws. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for its intended purpose. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
10. Feedback
If you send us ideas, suggestions or other feedback, we may use them without restriction or any obligation to you.
11. Fees
The Service is currently provided free of charge. If we introduce paid features or plans, we will tell you in advance and describe the price and terms. You will not be charged unless you expressly agree to a paid plan.
12. Changes to the Service
We may add, change, suspend or remove features, or discontinue the Service, at any time. If we plan to discontinue the Service entirely, we will give you reasonable advance notice where practical so you can retrieve any information you want to keep.
13. Suspension and termination
By you. You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from your profile settings. Deleting your account permanently deletes your account and the data associated with it, as described in the Privacy Policy. This cannot be undone.
By us. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, if your use creates risk or possible legal exposure for us or others, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service. Where reasonable and lawful, we will notify you first and give you a chance to fix the problem.
Sections 7 (to the extent needed to handle Your Content after termination), 9, 10 and 14 to 19 survive termination.
14. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement and accuracy.
We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free, that data will not be lost, or that receipt extraction, matching, categorization or other automated outputs will be accurate or complete.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.
15. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event will Satsuma or its owners, officers, employees, contractors or suppliers be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill or savings, arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms, however caused and on any theory of liability, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms will not exceed the greater of (a) the amounts you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, and (b) one hundred U.S. dollars (US$100).
These limits apply to the fullest extent permitted by law, but they do not limit liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, such as liability for fraud, gross negligence or willful misconduct, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your statutory rights as a consumer.
16. Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Satsuma and its owners, officers, employees and contractors from any claims, losses, liabilities and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from (a) your breach of these Terms, (b) Your Content, or (c) your connecting or using accounts or information you were not authorized to use.
17. Governing law and disputes
Talk to us first. Most concerns can be sorted out quickly. Before starting any formal proceeding, please contact us and give us 30 days to try to resolve the issue informally.
Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of [Governing law, e.g. the State of ___, USA], without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
Venue. Subject to the informal resolution step above, any dispute will be resolved exclusively in the courts located in [Court location, e.g. ___ County, ___], and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. Either party may bring an individual claim in small-claims court if it qualifies.
If you are a consumer living in a country that gives you the right to bring proceedings in your local courts, or to rely on mandatory local consumer law, nothing in these Terms removes that right.
18. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If a change is material, we will notify you by email or in the Service at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless the change is required sooner by law or addresses a security issue. The "Effective" date at the top shows when these Terms last changed. If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before then.
19. General
- Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service and replace any earlier agreements.
- Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum extent possible and the rest of these Terms remain in effect.
- No waiver. Not enforcing a provision is not a waiver of our right to do so later.
- Assignment. You may not transfer these Terms without our consent. We may transfer them in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, or to an affiliate, with notice to you.
- Force majeure. We are not liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including outages of third-party services, internet or power failures, and natural events.
- Notices. We may send you notices by email to the address on your account or through the Service. You can send legal notices to the contact details below.
- No third-party beneficiaries. These Terms do not give rights to anyone other than you and us.
- Headings and language. Headings are for convenience only. If these Terms are translated, the English version controls.
