Categorizing Receipt Line Items

Assign categories to individual line items on a matched receipt.

Categorizing receipt line items

Once a receipt is matched to a transaction, you can categorize each line item individually. This is how one purchase can be split across multiple categories without manually splitting the transaction.

For example, a single grocery run that includes household cleaning products, fresh produce, and a prescription can be split into three categories from the same receipt.

How to categorize line items

  1. Open a receipt (or find the transaction in the Review queue)
  2. The receipt's line items are shown
  3. Click the category on any line item to change it
  4. Changes are saved immediately

Envelopes and line items

This is also how spend gets attributed to envelopes (projects). If you're tracking a kitchen renovation and you buy some tiles along with other groceries, you can assign just the tile line items to your "Kitchen Reno" envelope from the matched receipt.

When line items drive the totals

Once a receipt is matched and its line items are categorized, those line-item categories determine where the spending is counted — not the transaction-level category. The transaction's category acts as a fallback for any line items without a category.
